THE GREEN WAY

Via Verde: ciudad de Mexico

Nine square meters of urban green per person.

This is the limit under which one should not go down, at least according to the World Health Organization.

Twenty million citizens in Mexico City have about four. Something like 40 million square meters of green areas are missing.

Since, in 1992, the UN declared Mexico City the“most polluted city in the world“, things have not changed much, as shown by a recent study published by Scientific Reports. The program “Hoy no Circola” is not giving the desired results. The emissions were only slightly reduced, certainly not cut by 15% as they thought and hoped.

And even if the town has lost that little glorious record – surpassed by Beijing, New Delhi and other Asian megacities – it remains the city with the worst air quality of the entire Western hemisphere. Particulate levels are 3-4 times higher than those recorded in New York or Buenos Aires.

The causes are many, of course. From the unfortunate geographical position, to the culture that imposes the machine as a status symbol of which no one can be deprived.

How to do then? How to turn gray into green?

The proposal comes from below, from a petition on Change.org that in a short time has collected more than 80 thousand signatures and has been approved by the Government. This is how Via Verde was born, a project to cover with vertical gardens the thousand and more pylons scattered across the 27 Km of carriageway.

Via Verde Mexico

More than 60,000 square meters of green can produce oxygen for 25.000 citizens, filter 27.000 tons of harmful gas, capture 5.000 kg of fine dust and eliminate 10.000 kg of heavy metals.

Every year.

A totally private initiative with a cost of 15 million euros, to which 100 thousand euros must be added for future maintenance, all payable thanks to an agreement that will allocate 10% of the columns for advertising purposes.

The principle is to creatively recover what we have, to give new life and usefulness to the urban space. Improve the air but not only, even the mood of citizens will benefit. Less stress and more happiness, as demonstrated by a research carried out last year by the WHO in collaboration with UNEP (United Nations Environment Program)

The pylons will be surrounded by a scaffolding that will support the plants without endangering the load-bearing structure of the bypass. Part of this frame will then be made by recycling thousands of plastic bottles. In addition, the water for their livelihood will be almost entirely collected in the second level of the elevated.

In short, nothing will be left to chance.

An unrealizable dream?

No. Because just a few weeks ago, on the 8th of February, the first 50 columns of Green Way were inaugurated!

The revolution is around every corner, it is up to us to decide whether to turn or continue to go straight.
